Agency billing software alternatives
The best shortlist starts with the work you need to complete. Time-to-invoice, client collection, accounting, margin and resource planning, and client workflow are different buying needs.
Short answer
ABH supports tracked-work invoices and manually records payments received elsewhere. Starter adds pipeline, proposals, contracts and onboarding; Pro adds included-hours retainers. Choose another product if collecting client payments, accounting integrations or a client login portal is essential.

How to choose
Write down the workflow you cannot leave outside the tool: time review, client collection, accounting, staffing economics or client paperwork. Start with two relevant comparisons rather than treating every product as an equivalent billing suite. The summaries above are editorial fit assessments; each detailed comparison links its dated primary evidence and identifies unknowns.
Compare the tier you actually need, account-user counts, billing commitment, usage limits, integrations and collection fees. A lower starting price can mean fewer capabilities or a tighter Free allowance. Hosted and self-hosted costs also need different estimates. ABH never collects agency client money; keep that boundary on the shortlist.
Build a fictional draft and define who checks evidence, approves time and reconciles external receipts. The service pricing guide, hourly, fixed and value pricing guide and invoice payment terms guide help make those operational decisions. They describe processes, not accounting or legal advice.
Where ABH is weaker today
Try a representative billing workflow
Start with one client, one project and a draft invoice, without copying sensitive historical records. Free includes one user, 20 tracked hours and three invoices per month, with a watermark. It does not include paid-plan client workflows or Pro retainers.
Use the existing practical guides to assess invoice evidence and retainer review, then check current plan caps before selecting a subscription.
Frequently asked questions
Does ABH collect payments from agency clients?
No. Agencies collect funds elsewhere and record receipts manually in ABH. Polar bills only the agency’s own ABH subscription.
Are all comparison capabilities included in Free?
No. Free is capped. Starter includes client documents and onboarding; Pro includes retainer tracking and finance tools. Check the pricing page for current limits.
